Chinese Export Silver Presentation

Taikut was located in Canton, a flourishing port/city in South China. Prior to the Treaty of Nanking (1842), export trade was confined to the port of Canton.

Taikut

Time Period:
Around 1870 to ?

Location:
Canton
Possibly Hong Kong

Maker Information:
Taikut was most likely a working shop but is included in this list because of the observance of his mark as the sole mark on a piece. The Chinese characters for Taikut-- Ta Chi, Da Ji, or Taai Kat-- have also been observed alongside the marks of larger retailers such as Wang Hing. These characters have also been observed on an item from Hong Kong maker WL suggesting that Taikut may also have operated in Hong Kong. However, without further evidence we are unsure whether this is the same Taikut.

Marks:
The mark of Taikut is known to exist in the following forms:

TAIKUT, 95, CANTON, and Chinese characters reading "Ta Chi, Da Ji, or Taai Kat" (otherwise Taikut)   Chinese characters reading "Ta Chi, Da Ji, or Taai Kat" (otherwise Taikut) with a larger retailer mark (i.e.- WANG HING or WL)

Known workshop/artisan marks:
Taikut is thought to be a working shop who crafted and sold wares from his shop to average customers and also larger retailers.
