According to an ad taken out by Sun Shing in "The Tourists' Guide to Canton" the firm describes itself as "Gold and Silver-smiths, Jewellers, Engravers of Stamps and Seals, &c." and also "Canton and Shanghai Gauzes, Crape-Shawls, Silk-dresses, Grass-clothes, lacquered Ivory and China-wares, Mother-o-pearl, Sandalwood, Curiosities, Ornaments, India Chairs, Tables, Rattan chairs, Mattings, Bamboo-blinds and other sundries, &c.(Forbes 88)" The mark of Sunshing always includes a period between the two S's. Note: Sun Shing should not be confused with Sunshing, an earlier silversmith whose mark is observed as SS (no period) with or without pseudo-British hallmarks rarely with any Chinese characters and always working in the Western style.
