Chinese Export Silver Presentation

Hung Chong was located in Canton & Shanghai - flourishing ports/cities in China. Prior to the Treaty of Nanking (1842), export trade was confined to the port of Canton but thereafter its dominance was replaced by Shanghai.

Around 1850 to 1925

Location:
Canton - Club Street, Honam Island and Shanghai- II-B Nanking Road.

Maker Information:
Hung Chong was a retailer with locations in both Canton and Shanghai. This firm was noted as carrying good jewelery but also seems to have been quite a prolific distributor of silverwares. Most of the firm's items were marked HC or HungChong and Co.

Marks:
The mark of Hung Chong has been observed invarious different forms. It is known to exist in the following forms:

 HC   HC with shop mark  
 HC with pseudo English hallmarks   HUNGCHONG&CO with shop mark 
 HUNGCHONG&CO

Hung Chong was known to employ a number of different workshops

Provenance: From the collection of Will Tomlinson
Form: Large standing cup with base in the form of a dragon head emerging from clouds and breathing fire creating the stem support for the bowl. Bowl with repousse dragons amongst clouds with central reserve bearing the three letters in undecipherable order "S,S,and E".

Provenance: From the collection of John Shenton
Form: Three piece cruet set including mustard pot, pepper castor, and open salt. Each with panels including four clawed dragon amidst streaming cloud forms, elder in garden beneath tall pine tree, streaming florals, bamboo, chrysanthemum, prunus, and chinese characters.
Dimensions: Mustard pot and pepper castor both 3 inches tall, open salt 1 3/4 inches tall
