We would like to acknowledge and thank the following sources consulted for this site:

  • Chan, David P. L. Chinese Export Silver, The Chan Collection. Singapore, 2005.
This book is irreplaceable because of the wide range of items in Mr. Chan’s collection. Rarely is a collection so diverse and offer so many different makers and forms. The pictures are stunning and certainly offer a great visual reference for any collector. In addition to the photographic documentation, Mr. Chan has assembled some great commentaries from various experts in the field and a very informative overview of Chinese Export Silver.

  • Forbes, H.A. Crosby, Kernan, John Devereu and Wilkins, Ruth. Chinese Export Silver 1785-1885. Museum of the American China Trade, Milton, Massachusetts, USA, 1975.

This book is the Bible of Chinese Export Silver. The depth and breadth of information gathered by these three visionaries is unmatched by any other reference work on the subject. From cover to cover this landmark work studies everything from the history of Chinese silver to its forms and makers. This book is a must have for any collector of Chinese Export Silver.

  • Kernan, John Devereau. The Chait Collection of Chinese Export Silver. Ralph M Chait Galleries, New York, 1985.

Another must have book on Chinese Export Silver, Mr. Devereau’s book contains the most detailed maker information that can be found on the subject. This landmark work also contains the best photographic documentation of marks and forms of any to date. Organized by maker/retailer, collectors can view styles of, marks of, and examples by makers from a variety of periods.

  • Marlowe, Alan James. Chinese Export Silver. John Sparks Limited, London, England, December 1990.

An irreplaceable reference for any Chinese Export Silver collector. As a scholar of China and expert on Chinese Export Silver, Mr. Marlowe has compiled what is certainly a landmark work in this field. Mr. Marlowe's knowledge of the Chinese language and marks, combined with this spectacular collection, makes this resource one of the best available when it comes to insight into makers and their pieces. Breathtaking pictures of items coupled with detailed descriptions of their makers & marks, along with informative remarks, make this an amazing factual and pictorial reference. The mark chart in Appendix A is one of the best published charts available in the field even containing the Chinese characters for the names of many makers. Including a foreword by H.A. Crosby Forbes and an unparalleled "Survey of Chinese Export Silver" by Mr. Marlowe, this is a reference packed full of invaluable information. I would also like to personally recognize and thank Alan for his friendship, gracious help, and guidance provided to me while creating this site.

  • Peabody Essex Museum, www.pem.org  East India Square, Salem Massachusetts, 2001-2007.

The Peabody Essex Museum houses the largest public collection of Chinese Export Silver in the world. Curator Emeritus, H A Crosby Forbes, did a masterful job of researching and maintaining this impressive collection which today stands as the crown jewel in the world of Chinese Export Silver collecting. Forbes’ contributions to this field of study can only be described as immeasurable.
